My goal is to serve the needs of my clients in a clear and responsive way. I know and understand the people of Eastern North Carolina, their concerns, their hard work, and the law.
My family’s strong commitment to public service is a badge that I am proud to wear. My father, John Lee Whitley, is also a lawyer and the former Chief District Court Judge for Wilson, Nash, and Edgecombe Counties. I also served the people of Wilson County for thirteen years as their elected Clerk of Court. As the Judge of Probate, I presided over thousands of hearings involving complicated and very personal matters. I rendered decisions in cases concerning the administration of estates, land divisions, guardianships, adoptions, foreclosures, and questions of competency. Prior to becoming the Clerk of Court, I practiced law in Wilson County for several years.
My practice is now focused on estate planning and administration, guardianship, elder law, business law, and civil litigation.
In 1991, I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. I received my Master of Arts degree from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. I am a 1998 graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law.
My wife Melissa and I have been married since 2005, and we have three young children. We are active members of First Christian Church Wilson, where I currently serve on the Board of Elders. On rare occasions, I sneak away and enjoy a travel adventure. These personal adventures have allowed me to explore the Australian Outback, complete several African safaris, and to go on several extended hiking and rafting tours throughout the Western US and Europe.
